There is a world of difference between Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime and the manga. There is the Season Zero which most people don’t even talk about. So, the anime adaptation of the first seven volumes of the manga is rarely even mentioned. The characters on the show also undergo significant changes which the anime fans miss out on. Then we have Yugi, the protagonist of the show who is depicted quite differently in the manga compared to the anime. Here we point out some significant aspects in which Yugi differs from his characterization in the anime.
Bandit Keith
We see Yugi make the Millennium Puzzle from scratch in only a few minutes which literally takes months of hard work to build. This happens during the Battle City arc as the puzzle is stolen by Bandit Keith after he was controlled by Marik. However, this never transpires in the manga since Pegasus had made him kill himself by turning his hand into a gun.
Yugi Vs Panik
We see Yugi meet Panik, a character who forces others to a duel and likes to take their Star Chips. Even when Yugi is surrounded by two Flamethrowers, he has to keep his calm, although he is well aware that both of them can be activated at any time. In the manga, their confrontation is quite different. Panik appears to be much more sadistic since he warns Yugi that if he wins, he will strangle him.
Yugi Vs Joey
One of the major changes in the show was how Joey and Yugi were made to fight it out quite often. They confront each other in the Duelist Kingdom, and the winner then goes on to challenge Pegasus, but things turn out much differently in the manga. Yugi went on to challenge Pegasus without ever having to confront Joey after he defeats Mai.
Yugi’s fight with Kaiba
Yugi and Kaiba fight using holographic monsters when they meet for the first time in the anime. But they had met with each other before in the manga. The two confronted each other for the first time when they were in school, and Kaiba tried to steal Yugi’s Blue Eye monster. He had borrowed them from his grandfather, so when he brought it with Kaiba, he was attacked by him. Yugi defeated him easily, and he never had to use Exodia.
No Memory of What Yami had Done
Initially, Yugi had no idea what Yami Yugi was doing in the manga. Yami would take over Yugi like Hulk takes over Bruce Banner and did whatever he wished to do. When Yugi came to his senses, he had no idea what had happened or what Yami had done while he was in control. Only when he makes peace with the fact that Yami takes over his body, then he comes to the realization of what Yugi had been doing while he was gone.
Tea likes Yami
Tea is rarely discussed by Yugi in the anime. But it is obvious he shares a very complicated relationship with her. She likes Yami and even longs for him when Yugi is back. However, the manga handles their situation quite differently. In the Duelist Kingdom, Yugi comes to the realization that she likes Yami and not him. But still, Tea insists and makes the case that it doesn’t matter since either way it’s him. However, that is technically not true.
