Recently, the official dates of the 73rd edition of the Writers Guild of America are scheduled for 21 March 2021. The event will be five weeks before the ceremony of Oscars. On Monday, the WGA made an announcement and said the submissions of the screenplay are open in the genre of documentary, adapted, and original; for TV-Radio-New Media scripts; in TV shows in comedy, drama, and new; and for the Paul Selvin Award which is presented by the WGA West.
The 73rd edition of the Writers Guild of America Awards honored the best television, writing in movie, and radio of 2020. Last time the nominees of radio and television for the 2020 event were announced on 5 December 2019; while for films the nominees were announced after a few weeks. On 1 February 2020, the winners of the event were declared. The first award show was broadcast on television in 2004. The award show was organized to appreciate incredible writing, video-games, television, film, radio, including nonfiction and fiction categories by the Writers Guild of America, West and Writers Guild of America, East. The TV awards are for shows that were aired and produced between 1 December and 30 November. However, the script must be produced under the collective bargaining agreement and the jurisdiction of the WGA in Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, or the United Kingdom.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 93rd Academy Awards in June but the telecast had been postponed by two months to 25 April 2021. The team of Variety reports that news and finds out that the delaying of the big night is happening due to the pandemic. Hence the WGA also follows in the footsteps of the Golden Globe Awards, Oscars, DGA Awards, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Film Award which have pushed the dates of their events due to the global pandemic coronavirus. So far the WGA has not announced the location of the award show, but usually, it takes place in New York and Los Angeles.
In the 72nd Writers Guild of America, among many movies including Knives Out, 1917, Booksmart, and Marriage Story, Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin-won’s written Parasite won the award of 2020 in the genre of Original Screenplay. And Jojo Rabbit, whose screenplay is amazingly written by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue won the Writers Guild of America for Best Adapted Screenplay. The story was inspired and adapted by an article titled “Can You Say…Hero?” written by Tom Junod. Alex Gibney’s documentary film The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley won the award for Best Documentary Screenplay among nominated movies like Foster, Citizen K, The Kingmaker, and Joseph Pulitzer. In the category of Best Comedy Series, Barry won the award. It was written by Duffy Boudreau, Alec Berg, Emily Heller, Bill Hader, Elizabeth Sarnoff, and Taofik Kolade. Many more categories drew the evening’s attention.
