Western Movies That You Should Definitely Watch

For all the movie buffs, if you think that you have watched it all, pause for a second and check if these films are on your list or not. Sometimes we don’t get to hear about the best of the movies ever made and especially when they were made half a century ago. The following list brings some of the Western genre films that you just can not miss.



The Magnificent Seven (1960)

This American western film is an Old West-style remake of the Japanese film Seven Samurai. The leading characters are portrayed by Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz. They are a group of gunfighters who are hired to protect a small Mexican village from the bandits.


A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

It is a Spaghetti Western film that was released in Italy in 1964 and the United States in 1967. A Fistful of Dollars is considered to have initiated the popularity of western genre films, which was followed by For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly which also stars Clint Eastwood.


The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966)

This is again a Spaghetti Western film, which is directed by Sergio Leone. The film has three main leads with Clint Eastwood as the good, Lee Van Cleef as the bad, and Elli Wallach as the ugly. The film is known for its cinematography and long shots. The story revolves around these gunfighters who are competing to find fortune from a buried cache of gold.


Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)

Third Spaghetti Western film in the list and second that is directed by Sergio Leone. This film is about the conflict that arose in a fictional town of Flagstone in the American Old West. The film has a lot to offer to the audience, from dramatic gunfights to desert landscapes and train robberies and much more.


The film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry in 2009 for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”


No Country For Old Men (2007)

The American neo-western crime thriller film is directed by the Coen brothers, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. It is regarded as one of their best films. The film is about a villain character Anton Chigurh who is a psychotic serial killer. Javier Bardem’s portrayal of the character is convincing and bone-chilling at the same time. The other commendable performances are by Tommy Lee Jones as Ed Tom Bell and Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss. Moss’s character was initially offered to Heath Ledger but denied for personal reasons.


The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is for everyone’s entertainment, even if you are new to the genre. The cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel is vibrant and captivating, and Tim Blake Nelson, as Buster Scruggs is impressive. After the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2018, it was made available on Netflix just after a week of its theatrical release, 9th November 2018.
