Use Nearby Share on Android with these Steps

Want to share or receive media files from nearby Android users? Try Nearby Share (Airdrop for Android). Nearby Share allows you to share photos, files, and web pages with other Android users instantly. Nearby Share is currently available on a few Android phones, but it will be available for use on more devices and Chromebooks in the upcoming time. Nearby Share can use WebRTC, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, depending on whether you are working online or offline.

Steps to Enable Nearby Share

To use Nearby Share, both the sender and the receiver should have it enabled on their devices.

  1. Go to Settings of your device

  2. Tap on Google

  3. Click on Device Connections

  4. Then press Nearby Share. Do make sure that the toggle button on the top is turned On.

  5. Then tap on Device Visibility.

  6. You can select contacts who can see you. If the device is hidden, you will be able to send files to others, but they won’t be able to share anything with you.

  7. To use Nearby Share, both parties need to be in contact with each other.

How to Use Nearby Share?

Once you have established a connection with the user with whom you want to share files, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Tap on Share on the file that you want to share.’

  2. Then press Nearby and bring your device and the recipient’s device close to each other.

  3. Select the device on which you want to send the files.

  4. Tap Accept on the recipient’s device.

  5. When you look back at your device, you will see that the file was sent, and the share sheet will completely disappear from your device’s screen.

  6. The file received on the recipient’s device can be opened with whatever app the user might have designated to open up that type of file.

How to get Nearby Share on your Device?

Currently, Nearby Share is available only for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones. Google has planned to bring it to other devices in the upcoming months. If you want to use nearby Share now, on your device other than Samsung or Pixel, sign up for the beta program of Nearby Share for Google Play Services.

Remember that the beta version is not much reliable and can lead you through the path of difficulties. If you have signed up for the beta program, but now you want to get out of it, then visit the same link and follow up with the instructions appearing there.

Nearby Share: AirDrop for Android?

Yes, you can say that Nearby Share is similar to Apple’s AirDrop. Both services work in a very similar way, but there are some differences, too, like the Nearby Share has added WebRTC for both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as its protocols for use. In nearby Share, users are not restricted to only a single device maker. The Samsung users can easily share files with Google Pixel users, and vice versa and this list will probably expand to other OEMs, too, in the upcoming days.

Final Verdict

So, with the help of the information mentioned above, you can use the Nearby Share for sharing or receiving files from other Android devices. Nearby Share is also termed as AirDrop for Android as it allows you to share media and web pages with other users on Android instantly. Currently, you may see Nearby Share in only a few Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel, but we are pretty sure that it is coming for use in other Android devices and for Chromebooks too, in the upcoming months.
