The Russo Brothers Have Revealed Why Avengers Lost in “Infinity War”

Although we are used to seeing a superhero defeating a supervillain all the time, there are some films which surprise us. Fans of MCU know this all too well ever since they have come out of the theaters after watching Avengers: Infinity War. The movie remarked the first-ever defeat of the Avengers and proved a fact that the gang of superheroes can be vulnerable too.

According to Joe and Anthony Russo, the fact that they can lose a war is what makes the Avengers so intriguing.

In the recent interview, they have mentioned the fact that Avengers’ defeat in the 2018 film had to happen.

Joe and Anthony Russo, commonly referred to as the Russo brothers, have collaborated on four Marvel films so far which includes two gigantic blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It is safe to say that both of them know the cinematic universe inside out.

The duo started out with the second Captain America film which saw Chris Evans as Steve Rogers aka Captain America go head to head against Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan). The director duo returned to helm the third Captain America film (Captain America: Civil War) which was the highest-grossing MCU film at that time. Captain America: Civil War saw Chris Evans’ Captain America go head to head against Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man because the former had kept a secret about the parents of the latter to himself.

Then they directed two of the biggest films ever made not just in MCU but in Hollywood. Russo Brothers steered the wheel of the 2018 colossal blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War which surpassed Avatar to become the highest-grossing film ever. Of course, the feat only lasted for about one year as its immediate sequel Avengers: Endgame surpassed Avengers: Infinity War to hold the crowning position which it still holds.

According to the Rotten Tomatoes website, the snap scene of the Avengers: Infinity War is the most memorable movie moment of the entire cinematic history.

The fate of the deceased characters hovered in the clouds of uncertainty for about a year before the film Avengers: Endgame unveiled their whereabouts.

Anthony and Joe Russo had explained way back in 2019 that the cause of the defeat was the dispute between the two central figures of the Avengers team. What the director duo was referencing to was the fight between Tony Stark and Iron Man which had originated in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War.

They added that Captain America and Tony Stark were like the pivots of the whole team and the two to have a falling out like that was devastating for the whole team. They alluded to the fact that the fight between the two was so deep that the situation was irreversible. In order for them to win against Thanos, they had to work together, which they didn’t do in the film.

Thanos was the biggest threat the Avengers had ever faced, and the internal acrimony between the team meant that there was simply no chance for them against Thanos.
