This next-generation psychological horror game for the Xbox Series X was unveiled for the very first time by Microsoft at the Xbox 20/20 event. The sound effects in the brief but intriguing trailer were enough to make the hair at the back of your neck stand. Ever since the game, there has been a lot of buzz around The Medium.
Set to launch this fall, the Xbox Series X is rumoured to be the most powerful gaming console that the world has seen. The new hardware is transforming the way that games are being designed, and the developers are certainly making the most of its capabilities. The developing veteran Bloopers lead game designer Wojciech Piejko, in a brief interview, said, “Nothing is simple, nothing is black and white.” The game is announced to explore the theme of duality through the abilities of a spiritual medium.
The game is set in Krakow, Poland where the lead character of the game, Marianne is a medium who lives in two worlds, one being the real world as we know it and the other, a spirit world. The game keeps introducing new perspectives to challenge your perception as more and more mysteries are revealed with time. The spirit world reflects all of the characters traumatic emotions and inner struggle. A vision of the murder of a child continuously haunts her as she undertakes a journey to a deserted hotel resort. An immersive and disturbingly graphic environment is created as Marianne begins to look for tough answers.
The game’s chilling soundtrack is a result of a collaboration between Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka, two composers well known for their work in Silent Hill. Multiple references have been made connecting The Medium to the iconic Silent Hill series. However, similar as it might be, The Medium is much more than an inspired remake.
A lot of effort has been put into producing a dark and psychologically disturbing environment for the game. The developer has used a lot of means to help immerse the player into their dual worlds, including the involving graphics and the eerie soundtrack. The game features a 4k resolution that enhances the experience and involvement of the player and showcases the nightmare spirit world in all its horrifying glory.
Unlike the multiple cross-generation games that have been showcased so far, The Medium is exclusively a next-gen game. Blooper claims that The Medium is by far the most ambitious project that they have ever undertaken. This being said, they are among the first developers creating for the Xbox Series X. This powerful next-gen gaming console combining their powers with the psychological horror veteran is set to bring The Medium to life without any compromises.
Not much is known about this much-anticipated game as the developers continue to maintain the veil of one of their core game features. With all the astonishing breakthroughs that technology has brought to us in a very brief period of time, the bar is set high, and there is a lot of excitement in the air.
