The Great British Bake Off Has Changed Since Series One

The contestants of The Great British Bake Off have their culinary skills limited by jelly art, cages, Jewish babkas, Danish horns, and Japanese crepe cakes- do not forget edible busts of David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.

The Great British Bake Off is a TV baking competition produced by Love Productions in which a group of bakers compete against each other and attempt to impress the judges with their recipe. The first episode aired on 17 August 2010. The first four series were broadcasted on BBC Two, and eventually, it moved to BBC while gaining popularity. The series was initially presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins with judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. The shows have completed their eleven seasons, and the names of the winners in the chronological order are Edd Kimber, Joanne Wheatley, John Whaite, Frances Quinn, Nancy Birtwhistle, Nadiya Hussain, Candice Brown, Sophie Faldo, Rahul Mandal, and David Atherton.

Over the past decades, the show’s difficulty level is increasing, and the baking standard of the contestants has also increased. When the show used to air on BBCTwo things and games were more straightforward. The first challenge of the show was to bake a cake. It is a signature challenge because it says a lot about the bakers- it could be a family recipe or a connection with their personality or past.

For different contestants, the cake challenge meant something different. For example, for a bus driver from south Wales, Mark, it was the sticky marmalade tea loaf. And for Annetha from Essex, the cake was the same cake that her friend asked for her engagement party, a Light Jamaican Black Cake.

The first task might seem like a simple one, and at that beginning stage, Mark had not got the chance to learn that contestants should not say things like: “There is not a huge amount that can go wrong.”

Mark was the first contestant to leave the show. When he was leaving co-host, Sue Perkins said that he has to put your heart into this. She encouraged him by saying that he has the whole weekend. He has the perfect tie. Stand up straight.

After a little prep talk, Mark was ready to face the next challenge. Sadly, Mark still got eliminated by the end of the week. He realized that the competition might be a little uphill battle than it seems. He admitted that cakes are not his strong area.

The final episode of The Great British Bake Off 2020 premiered on 24 November 2020 at 20:00 GMT on Channel 4.
