Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan’s one of the high budget science fiction movies Tenet is aiming for theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York. The brilliant time-bending film is one of the major projects that has collected a gross of $350 million internationally.
Tenet is a sci-fi action thriller movie directed and written by Christopher Nolan. Nolan also produced the film with Emma Thomas. John David Washington is in the protagonist’s role alongside some talented actors Robert Pattinson, Dimple Kapadia, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kenneth Branagh.
Nolan conceived the idea of the film twenty years ago. He started working on the script in 2014 and made a conscious effort not to get influenced by any other spy films other than his memory. The film is based on a time-bending phenomenon. The title of the movie “Tenet” is a palindrome, reads the same forward as backward.
The story revolves around an unnamed CIA agent (played by Washington) who joins an undercover agent. He is captured by mercenaries and endures torture before consuming the cyanide pill. The whole sequence was a test to prove his loyalty. The ‘Protagonist’ is now part of the team, and the organization is after some mission, which can be achieved by time inversion technology by inverting entropy.
The movie was delayed three times before its release due to the pandemic COVID-19. It was then released on 26 September 2020 in the United Kingdom and on 3 August 2020 in the United States. Tenet collected $347.1 million worldwide against a budget of $200 million. It is the fourth highest-grossing movie in 2020.
When the movie was released, the major film chains like Regal Cinemas, AMC severely struggled during the lockdown period. However, Tenet managed to collect a good opening weekend. Still, its lower return over the period is not sufficient for the independent theaters to sustain. The film industry’s biggest markets in Los Angeles and New York have not participated in box office collection as the movie theatres are fully closed.
In this challenging time, Nolan’s Tenet has held the torch of traditional release while other films are now shifting towards streaming platforms.
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has worked hard for this movie. The film has been under production for the past two years. The filming involved a large crew of 250 people. It took place in seven countries, including- Estonia, Italy, Denmark, India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway. Nolan did not use any green screen for any sequence, as he believes people know the difference between VFX and authentic shots.
Nolan knew the small screen of mobile phones, laptops, or TV could not do justice to the film’s grand visuals. Hence he and W.B chose only a theatrical release.
In a press release, Warner Brothers shared that the team is planning to release the movie theatrically in Los Angeles and New York. The director himself has been vocal about the theatrical release, which is essential for the film. However, the United States’ current situation does not promise that the market would be open anytime soon. The studio also shared that the movie would be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital purchase in December.
The idea of a theatrical release is excellent, but it is unclear how the studio would manage to do that. Many blockbusters like Dune, F9, Black Widow, and No Time to Die are delaying their release dates for the health crisis. And when the theatres start opening, there won’t be much space to breathe for most films. The filmmakers and fans are talking about saving theatres, but the numbers are not looking good.
However, the delay of so many high budget films gives us hope of normalcy in the future. The audience of Los Angeles and New York City still have the chance to witness Nolan’s most expensive film, Tenet, on the big screen.
