Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best mecha anime ever made. It discusses some very complex and deeply philosophical, religious, and psychological ideas bound to keep fans on the edge of their seats. The bio-organic lifeforms that are the focus of the show are more like animals than mecha. They are very tough to be controlled and often enter a Berserker Rage, giving in completely to their animalistic urges that lead to terrible outcomes. Although there is a lot to enjoy on the show, gruesome and absurd fights are probably one of its most exciting aspects. However, it is intriguing to contemplate which of these furious big-engineered titans is the most dangerous. Today we look at every one of them to answer this question.
Evangelion Unit – 08
Mari’s Evangelion Unit – 08 makes an appearance in Evangelion 3.33, but it is rarely seen during the movie. There are two versions of Unit – 08, with the other one being called Evangelion Unit – 08ß, which have some impressive upgrades in its design. Most of the time, Unit – 08 is used as a support to Evangelion Unit – 02. Its attacks are relatively ineffective against anyone. So, Evangelion Unit – 08 merely functions as a support unit that is not as effective in fighting as others.
Evangelion Unit – 04
Evangelion Unit – 04 does not appear in any of the movies. However, it has made appearances in many video games or as an action figure. In the version of anime, Unit – 04 vanishes along with its entire crew. The Unit could inflict massive amounts of destruction. It was even more dangerous than Unit-03, but it is strange that ultimately it was Unit-03 that became an Angel.
Mass Production Evangelions
No other Evangelions are as terrifying as the Mass Production Evangelions. They are piloted by the Dummy Plug Systems and have tremendous ability to cause some severe damage on the enemy. Irrespective of the injuries that it might incur while fighting, Mass Production Evangelions are built to continue attacking as long as possible. Since they attack in a group, it makes them even more horrifying since their victims have a very slim chance of withstanding the onslaught.
Not only are these Evangelions relentless and brutal, but they are also efficient at what they do. However, they do have a weakness; as a group, they might be very useful, but they are not that efficient or effective when fighting individually. Unit-02 can be used to keep them down, but they too can’t control them for a long time. The important thing is to keep them there once you get them down.
Evangelion Mark.06
Evangelion Mark.06 is one of the deadliest mechs in the show, but they have been underutilized. Even though it helped stop Evangelion Unit-01 after it had triggered the Third Impact, but unfortunately, it never did anything impressive after that. It is disappointing to see such a remarkable mech being underutilized and never used to its potential. It is a means to summon the Angels, but its destructive powers are difficult to estimate to this day.
Evangelion Mark.09
Mark.09 is quite similar to Mass Production Evangelions in several aspects. It can change its form, regenerate, and is nearly impossible to put down. It is one of the most frightening and powerful Angels around. It is strong enough to withstand Evangelion Unit-08’s Anti-AT Field bullets; however, they get damaged a lot due to the Unit-02. But, the tremendous lethality of Mark.09 cannot be underestimated because of these factors.
Evangelion Unit-02
Evangelion Unit-02 is, without a doubt, one of the strongest and most dangerous Evangelion that has the ability to literally change the outcome of the battle on its own. It is quite similar to Unit-01 in terms of power. In one of the best animated fights of all time, Unit-02 successfully held off an entire Japanese military along with nine other Evangelions. However, an even more powerful form of Unit-02 was introduced in Rebuild of Evangelion, when the alternate super-powered form of Evangelion Unit-02: Beast Mode was first seen. Unit-02 is so good that it can even hold off Evangelion 13 that is the most powerful of all Evangelions. Although Evangelion Unit-02 is a deadly weapon, it fights like the most dangerous mecha in the world when piloted by Asuka or Mai.
Evangelion Unit-01
When compared with Unit-02, Evangelion Unit-01 appears to be weaker in battle. Even in its Berserker Rage, Unit-01 fails to surpass Unit-02’s Beast Mode. So, why is it considered more powerful? Its ability to trigger Third Impact alone is so useful and dangerous that it makes up for everything else. It was specially designed to trigger the forces of Instrumentality in the original series and Rebuild. In fact, it manages to activate the Third Impact in Rebuild with only the sheer force of the pilot’s will.
Evangelion Unit-13
Evangelion Unit-13 is quite literally an upgraded version of Unit-01. It is much more powerful and requires two pilots simultaneously to control it. Unit-13 was never defeated in a fight, but it ends up self-sabotaging in a fight instead. The lethality of Unit-13 is still unknown since one more movie in the series is awaiting release. However, whatever we know of Unit-13, ensures that it is the strongest Evangelion in the series.
